Roland-Garros – Opening Week
The red clay of Stade Roland-Garros comes alive this week as the 2026 French Open begins its three-week journey in Paris. From Monday to Friday, qualifying rounds will determine which rising stars and determined fighters earn their place in the main draw alongside the world's best.
What makes Roland-Garros unique among the Grand Slams is the relentless physical and mental toll of clay-court tennis. Points are longer, rallies are deeper, and matches can stretch into exhausting five-set battles that test every fibre of a player's body and mind. There are no shortcuts on the terre battue — only patience, endurance, and tactical brilliance will prevail.
All eyes this fortnight will be on Jannik Sinner. The World No. 1 arrives in Paris in devastating form, having just won the Italian Open in Rome to complete the career Golden Masters — winning all nine ATP Masters 1000 titles. He was one point away from the career Grand Slam at Roland-Garros last year and returns as the overwhelming favourite to finally claim the title that has eluded him.
Olympic champion Novak Djokovic adds intrigue to the draw. The 24-time Grand Slam winner has played just one match on clay this season and only three tournaments all year, yet his pedigree on this surface remains unmatched. Whether the Serbian legend can summon another deep run at the age of 39 is one of the great storylines of the fortnight.
Thursday evening brings a special moment as Gaël Monfils takes centre stage on Court Philippe-Chatrier for a farewell celebration before his final Roland-Garros. The charismatic Frenchman, who has thrilled Parisian crowds for two decades, will be honoured with an evening of tennis, music, and emotion from 7:30 PM.
The qualifying rounds may be the warm-up act, but they carry their own drama — 128 men and 128 women fighting for just 16 spots in each draw. For many, this week represents the biggest opportunity of their careers.
Qualifying Rounds: Monday 18 – Friday 22 May, daily from 10:00 AM CET · Main Draw: Sunday 24 May – Sunday 7 June
