The international break is over and Europe's big leagues are back with a bang. The headline act is at Anfield on Sunday, where Liverpool host Manchester City. City are the only side with a 100% record after five games (15 points, 13 goals scored, 5 conceded), while unbeaten Liverpool sit on 9 points with two wins and three draws. Arsenal are second on 12 points and host Leeds on Saturday lunchtime, and Manchester United (12th, 5 points) welcome Tottenham in Saturday's evening kick-off, a month after losing 1-0 to City at Old Trafford.

Bayern Munich (10 points) travel to Augsburg, who sit fourth on 7 points and have beaten Bayern in each of the last two meetings. Leipzig host Frankfurt in Saturday's evening game.

In La Liga, Barcelona have won all seven games (21 points, 31 goals for and 7 against) and face Getafe, 11th with 8 points and just 4 goals scored all season. Real Madrid (15 points) host Villarreal after defeats to Betis and Atlético, and Atlético Madrid (16 points) travel to Alavés in the early evening game.

The new NHL season has delivered goals from the opening week. The Carolina Hurricanes beat the Canadiens 6-4 (Hall scored twice and Aho added a power-play goal and two assists), the Toronto Maple Leafs edged the Predators 5-4 in overtime with Auston Matthews scoring the winner with 14 seconds left and finishing on four points, and rookie Gavin McKenna scored his first NHL goal and added an assist in that game. The Oilers beat the Ducks 5-2 on Wednesday after scoring five goals in the second period. It is also Alex Ovechkin's farewell season, so every Capitals game carries extra attention.

Friday is a quiet start, headlined by Rangers at Capitals. Saturday is the big night: 14 games, including an afternoon Flyers–Bruins, Oilers at Sharks, Wild at Panthers (Florida will be without the injured Brad Marchand), and a seven-game 7 p.m. ET wave featuring Maple Leafs at Avalanche, Hurricanes at Blackhawks and Stars at Penguins.
