Roland-Garros – The Draw is Blown Wide Open
Nobody saw this coming. The 2026 French Open has been ripped apart by two seismic upsets that have rewritten the entire tournament — and the history books along with it.
Jannik Sinner is out. The world No. 1, on a 29-match winning streak and the overwhelming favourite to complete the career Grand Slam, fell in a dramatic five-set second-round loss to Juan Manuel Cerúndolo. Sinner was a game away from winning in straight sets before cramping and heat exhaustion destroyed him in the brutal Parisian heatwave. The man who swept every clay Masters this season — gone before the Round of 16.
Novak Djokovic is out. One day after Sinner's exit, the 24-time Grand Slam champion and three-time Roland-Garros winner fell in the third round to 19-year-old João Fonseca — the teen prodigy we flagged last week. The Brazilian came from two sets down to stun Djokovic 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5 in one of the most remarkable results in French Open history.
The result? For the first time in the Open Era — since 1968 — the Round of 16 at a Grand Slam contains zero former major champions. There will be a first-time Slam winner crowned on Sunday. As the official Roland-Garros site put it: "Welcome to the great wide open."
Who's left standing? Second seed Alexander Zverev (the 2024 finalist) and fourth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime are the highest-ranked men remaining. Fonseca, the teenager who slayed Djokovic, is suddenly a genuine contender. Lucky loser Jesper de Jong — ranked 111th — became just the third lucky loser in Open Era history to reach the fourth round here. And 17-year-old French wild card Moïse Kouamé made the third round, the youngest to do so at a major since Nadal at Wimbledon 2003.
This is no longer a tournament with a clear favourite. It is a lottery of opportunity — and for a generation of players who have lived in Djokovic and Sinner's shadow, it is the chance of a lifetime.
Round of 16: Sunday 31 May – Monday 1 June · Quarterfinals: Tuesday 2 – Wednesday 3 June · Semifinals: Thursday 4 – Friday 5 June · Women's Final: Saturday 6 June · Men's Final: Sunday 7 June
